Star Biscuits and Berries with Fresh Whipped Cream
This is the kissing cousin to my favorite dessert, Strawberry Shortcake (photos and recipe here). As an aside, instead of traditional birthday cake, I made Strawberry Shortcake for my Mom’s birthday celebration one summer. It is her favorite dessert and mine. In my book, Strawberry Shortcake is one of the best summer desserts. If you are entertaining for a crowd, everything can be made ahead of time and assembled when you are ready.

Star Biscuits and Berries
Fast forward to last Sunday morning when I was in the mood to make ‘dessert for breakfast.’ We always have fresh fruit at home and I knew I had all the ingredients to pull something together very quickly. Being efficient in the kitchen was never part of my style. But the cooking channels I watch must rubbing off on me. I’m actually pausing to strategize on the proper sequence of actions required to make things as efficiently as possible. What a geek! I preheated my oven, put my Kitchenaid mixer in the freezer and made a quick batch of biscuit dough. I cut two different sizes of star-shaped biscuits using cookie cutters because they would be prettier than a regular shaped biscuit (regular is boring). While the biscuits were baking, I sliced fresh strawberries and mixed them with blueberries and made some fresh whipped cream. I piled everything on a plate and took a few photos before the whipped cream got warm. I was feeling a bit guilty about eating dessert at 9:00 am until I talked myself into believing that this could pass for an honest to goodness legitimate breakfast. Fresh fruits, cream and biscuits. Totally.
