Hi guys! I’m excited to announce that I am starting a series called New Design Trends I Am Loving. These are things that I am seeing repeatedly come across my little lane on the information highway. I actually started doing this last year with fashion trends and I didn’t see any reason why I couldn’t do the same for my other passion, interior design.
So, how do I know something is a trend? As a blogger, I am constantly getting bombarded with information from many different sources. The number of emails, promotions and social media traffic I get daily can be over whelming. It’s a love hate relationship because you have to immerse yourself in order to be on the cusp of what’s new and relevant. I know that something is beginning to trend when it starts coming across ALL my media channels (digital & print).
That said, I’m pretty selective about which brands and businesses I follow. Even then, I filter out anything that doesn’t appeal to my style. For example, Elle Decor, one of my favorite sources of interior design, predicted that butterfly motifs (think wallpaper, soft furnishings) would trend in 2017. Gratefully, I haven’t seen too much of this. I’m not a design expert, but even if the infamous interior designer, Michael S. Smith started using butterflies in his projects, it’s not something that would ever be incorporated in my home.
New Design Trends I Am Loving: Round Mirrors
I’m really loving round mirrors lately! They are popping up everywhere and for good reason. I thought about why I like them so much and one word immediately came to mind: Portal.
As you look through the following photos, try to imagine the same wall with a rectangular mirror. I’ll bet that you will come to the same conclusion I did. It wouldn’t be the same at all. There’s a quality about the round shape that draws you in. It almost feels like there’s something more behind the mirror that you can sense, but you can’t see.
From a design perspective, round mirrors are so much more interesting! The shape transcends the practical purpose we use mirrors for (i.e. make spaces feel more expansive and bright) into a work of art that reflects all the things around us that we love. Best places to use round mirrors: entryway and bathroom.
Which room would you use a round mirror in?
