As ridiculous as it sounds to be in competition with my husband about our baby’s first word. I was. I played fair and only said the word “Mama” a hundred times a day while my husband, Kerry, whispered into our children’s ears about how very special they are – and they fell in love with him. Dada came before Mama. I knew early on in the “dating stage” that my future husband would be a great dad. I would see him with our friend’s children and watch him transform from this buttoned-up guy to someone doing a dead-on imitation of Donald Duck (it is one of his talents). He’d have the kids giggling uncontrollably and their laughter was all he needed to keep going.
When our son, Jackson, was born, he immediately stepped into the caregiver role and took care of almost everything that our new baby needed. He has natural babycare instincts and was hands on with diaper changes, bathing, dressing, rocking and holding – and when I couldn’t soothe our crying baby, he could. Two beautiful children and eleven years later, he glides seamlessly from managing his son’s baseball team to kitchen dance parties with his girl. I’m filled with gratitude on Father’s Day and look forward to making his day special.
