Hopefully you had the same warm weather that we enjoyed here on the Connecticut Coast yesterday! It was in the low 80’s most of the day which created the ideal backdrop for an Egg Hunt followed by a delicious Easter Brunch. When we got back home, everyone changed out of their “Sunday Best” and I immediately opened up some windows and doors to let in the fresh air.
The sunny spring weather has me thinking about switching out my fall/winter clothes for spring/summer. I’m going to wait a couple more weeks for that, but in the meantime, I am looking for new items to freshen up my spring wardrobe.
Have you noticed the new crop jeans trend? They are the perfect weight for the still cool temperatures, but don’t have the heavy look of traditional length jeans. I’m seeing a lot of them neatly un-hemmed, and others that are completely frayed. The frayed look is a little dicey to pull off. I want to aim for the “Chanel frayed” and avoid the “Castaway on a deserted island” frayed.
Personally, I think that the “released hem” or “frayed hem” is enough without layering on the distressed elements at the pockets and knees. At that point, the jeans are ripped every which way and I think you’re flirting with a ragged look. I also think that a flare at the hem is more stylish for a crop jean. A flared jean is especially important if you want to downplay your tummy, hips and derriere. Capri pants (tapered from the waist to the calf) will only emphasize the aforementioned areas.
What to wear with crop jeans? A turtle-neck sweater, or any fitted sweater, a t-shirt, a button-down shirt. You can easily layer on a jacket or longer coat. As far as shoes, I prefer heels or boots with cropped jeans, but flats work too. If you’re not sure you want to take the plunge, try rolling up a pair of straight leg jeans so they stop midway between your knee and ankle. Or, grab a pair of scissors and make your own crop jean.

I encourage you to shop in your own closet to pull together a look like the one below – which I L-O-V-E. This is a chic all-day look for the city that can take you into any restaurant from lunch to dinner. All you need is a a long sleeve black t-shirt, crop jeans, a black chain bag (click HERE for my blog post about chain bags) and simple black flats or heels. I can almost guarantee that the woman in this photo is not a 5′ 10″ model. These jeans are for everyone, regardless of height.
And if you think that they are only for smaller sizes, I beg to differ. Look how great this woman looks in this plus size.
If you’re hooked on the look you can shop my favorites. I hope that you love them as much as I do!
