CT in style
At first I wasn’t sure if I was at the right venue. I’d been excited for weeks in anticipation of attending the Near & Far Aid Pre-Tour Designer Breakfast featuring interior designer, Alexa Hampton. And although it looked like her at the podium – she wasn’t at all what I expected. Instead of the formal, yet predictable slideshow, she had the entire audience roaring in laughter with her hilarious interior design stories. I’m convinced she could easily make a living as a stand up comic, but this funny and down-to-earth woman is also a very talented interior designer. All kidding aside, she did take us through a great presentation of some of her client’s projects and shared fabulous decorating techniques. My big take-aways that I will incorporate in my own home are:
1. Drapes just kissing the floor, Alexa said that anything longer is “dirty.”
2. Paint a small space in a dark color because the light plays against the shadows and you don’t know where the walls end giving the illusion of a larger space.
3. When creating a gallery wall, don’t line up the picture frames at the top or bottom, align them in the center. And yes, it is okay to mix and match frames.
I was so thrilled to have a chance to meet Alexa and I am savoring every page in her second book, Decorating in Detail. Her book gives us a tour of seven elegant homes that she worked on from start to finish. I’m showcasing a home she did in the Hamptons because I have a weakness for blue and white.
