One of the greatest byproducts of writing a blog is how much I have learned. While scouting online for images of campaign desks, my research revealed some interesting facts about the origin and history of campaign desks. I didn’t know that they have been around since the days of Julius Caesar; the little I knew about them is that they were used during military campaigns (hence the name) at the time of the American Civil War. I remember seeing images in Civil War books of military leaders in elaborate tents that were set up as temporary living quarters complete with bedroom, living room and office furniture. Many tents were even outfitted with items like rugs and mirrors, things that I would consider a luxury item during an active war. A campaign desk has evolved over the years, but is classified as any portable desk. The original design was composed of three main pieces, one set of legs that were hinged and a top. All the pieces were small so that it could be assembled and disassembled quickly and easily moved from one location to another. The intention of the original design was to have a desk that could fold down into something that was compact and lightweight so it could be carried on a military march.
Classic campaign desks have X-shaped legs, however, you can find many other styles on the market that have a base cabinet with drawers. One of the things that I am so attracted to about this piece of furniture is its diversity. Small yet packed with style, it can be used in every room of the home. I’ve included a roundup of campaign desks to show you how truly versatile they are. For once, choosing the color of the desk is the easy part. In a high gloss white lacquer paint, they are pretty enough to be used as a woman’s vanity table and left in a natural wood, any guy would love it as a home office desk. It also doubles beautifully as an entry table, with drawers to put away keys and store mail. Painting it in a bright, fun color will liven up a small bedroom and it is ideal for teens and college students. The campaign desk it a really smart, portable solution for a small dorm room because is can be packed flat in the car and won’t take up a lot of space.
